Latest unemployment rates from the ONS show under 25s have been worst affected by job losses, with almost 60% of the fall coming from this age group. However, the better news from a CIPD survey is that employers are intending to recruit new staff early this year. 56% planned to recruit in early 2021, especially in healthcare, ICT and business services. Here are some top tips on how younger people can compete in the job market.

1. Skills and experience
Include non-work skills and experience in your CV or job applications. This could be relevant voluntary work; positions of responsibility held at school, college or university; or hobbies such as team sports that literally show you’re a team player!
Identify and sell your transferable skills to show potential employers that you have what they’re looking for. For example, if you’ve been working in hospitality, you’ll probably have good customer support skills that could be valued in a business services job.

2. Training
Think about retraining for jobs in sectors that are showing a growth in employment. There are many training companies and lots of online courses available, so choose wisely and look for those that offer a recognised qualification, or accreditation.
3. Temporary Work
Think about temporary work. It’s usually easier to get a temporary job and it’ll give you more experience to put on your CV. It can also be the route to being offered a permanent job, as it gives you the opportunity to prove your worth to an employer.

4. Flexibility
Be flexible about the kind of work you’re prepared to do. You might not get your ideal job straight away, but other opportunities can open up once you’re working for a company.
5. Networking
Use your social networks. Not all jobs are advertised and a recommendation from someone who knows you is always a good thing.

6. Mental Attitude
Have a positive mental attitude. Be prepared for rejection, but use that to learn what you need to do differently to succeed next time. Tap into your energy and enthusiasm for the things you enjoy doing and let potential employers see that.
Treat job hunting as if it was a full-time job. You need to put in the hours to get the reward at the end of it!
